HERRIMAN, Utah – Sky Blue FC midfielder Kenie Wright will miss the remainder of the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup after suffering a torn right ACL during a team training session on Sunday.

Wright, 22, sustained the non-contact injury during a small-sided game. Details of her surgery and rehabilitation will be available at a later date.

“I am heartbroken by the news that I have torn my ACL but I have a great support system in my teammates, friends, family, and the Sky Blue staff,” Wright said. “I know I will come back stronger and healthier for the 2021 season. I’m wishing the best to the team for the rest of the tournament. I’ll be watching and cheering them on!”

Added head coach Freya Coombe: “The injury to Kenie is really upsetting not just for her, but the whole team. Kenie has been working hard and training well and this is a tough blow for her. She is a really positive person and I know she will attack her rehab with the same energy and desire as she attacks training. We look forward to seeing her back on the field next season.”

The Mount Laurel, N.J. native was selected with overall pick number 29 out of Rutgers University in the 2019 NWSL college draft. Wright had yet to appear in the NWSL Challenge Cup as an available sub. She made five appearances in the 2019 season and recorded one assist.
