WASHINGTON, D.C. — There was little doubt New York City FC played its finest game of the young Major League Soccer season Sunday.
After all, there was little to compare with the previous six winless matches. City registered an emphatic 2-0 win over D.C. United at Audi Field.
“I think today we showed the way [Dome Torrent] wants to play and finally we got a win,” left back Anton Tinnerholm said.
Torrent desperately needed a win because he was on the hot seat, thanks to a rather abysmal 0-1-5 start.
“Today, [we] deserved to win this game because I know how hard they work every single day at our facility,” he said.
The result also was NYCFC’s first shutout win of the season. Goalkeeper Sean Johnson has two clean sheets, but they came via scoreless draws at home.
“Of course, everyone knows that we haven’t won, and it’s our first win so we’re happy,” left back Anton Tinnerholm said. “I think if you look at our defense, that’s the best in four months since I arrived back here. We know they have a lot of quality players, especially in [Luciano] Acosta and [Wayne] Rooney. They didn’t score.”
City will have two days of rest before hosting the Chicago Fire at Yankee Stadium Wednesday night.
“Now it’s an even more important game on Wednesday and I think we have to look at this game … and it shows the character of the players,” Tinnerholm said.
